Vacation Happens

Our trip to California in June started off great. The drive out was smooth and easy. The weather was nice. We enjoyed a week in Turlock going to parks and the kids playing on splash pads and the trampoline. Paul completed at least 20 puzzles.

We visited the Modesto temple site one day with Stephanie, Milo and Orion. We visited the office and saw the model for it and met the site missionaries. It's going to look a little like a California mission and has almond blossom and waterfall elements to represent Yosemite.
Friday we had a fantastic day at Pinecrest Lake up in the Sierra Nevadas. The weather was perfect and the beach wasn't crowded at all. The kids had a lot of fun. Of course we got giant ice cream cones at the end.
The next part wasn't fun. On the way home from the lake our car was totaled after a car tried to cross the highway unexpectedly in front of us. We collided with the other car hard, spinning it around and into the railing. Both of our front airbags deployed. The experience was frightening. Luckily no one was injured or went to the hospital. Emily and Richard and my Dad and Ingrid saw us and pulled over not long after. They were able to take the kids and our stuff home. An officer gave Sarah and I a ride to Sonora after the tow truck came. Jose drove up from Modesto and gave us a lift back to Turlock.
We had hopes to still see Heather and Julie's families at the campsite in Santa Cruz on Sunday. Unfortunately Kahlan started throwing up on Saturday night. On Monday we got a rental car and Juniper started throwing up. We had decided to cut the trip short and head back to Utah early the next morning. A little before midnight Penny threw up her dinner in her bed. An hour later Paul threw up his dinner. So we were up past 2 AM dealing with lots more throw up. We decided to sleep in a bit and leave closer to 11 AM. Juniper threw up again right before getting into the car.
We left Turlock with dread and each kid holding a barf bag. We had just reached Modesto when Penny threw up her breakfast and missed the bag. We had to pull over and change her clothes. She was really sweet and calm the whole time. She threw up every 20 minutes or so for the next 3 hours until we got to Reno. We had gone thru at least 10 bags and had run out. So we stopped at a store and got some bags and Pedialyte at Heather's suggestion. Penny said her body liked it and nobody was sick the rest of the trip. It was a strange somber drive. All the kids were quiet and resting. Nobody wanted snacks. We made it back to Utah at 1 AM. The next day all the kids were fine.
