The end of Summer came and school started on Thursday last week. We have Penny starting 1st, Paul starting 3rd, Juniper starting 5th and Kahlan starting 8th grade!
We went to back to school night at Tolman Elementary and met their new teachers. The girls all got new haircuts for the new year. Although I believe this Summer was really enjoyable for them all, they are very happy to be back at school with their friends.
Sarah and I were able to go on a backpacking adventure this year. The kids stayed at Sarah's parents house for a few nights. We went up to the High Uintas to hike up to Red Castle Lake. It was quite a long way to hike in, about 11 miles.
The first day was tough but the trail was pretty and took us thru forests and meadows. We saw 1 moose on the way up, some horses and lots of cows. It took us about 9 hours to finally get to a campsite at the lower lake. We got rained on pretty hard a few times in the afternoon and had to get out our trusty ponchos.
No one was around up by the lake when we arrived and we weren't sure where to go. It had been raining hard for the last hour. The trail was becoming a small stream and we were exhausted, soaked and cold. It was getting dark. Luckily we saw a decent site above the lake and a small spot for our tent that wasn't a mud puddle. It was still raining so we quickly set up our tent under a tree, then carried it to the good spot and staked it down. It was so nice to have a warm dry tent.
The next day was great. We got up, ate a good breakfast and were feeling pretty good. We hiked down to the lower lake and then up to the main Red Castle Lake. It was a gorgeous area with high cliffs and great views. After lunch the storm clouds and the rain came back so we made our way back to our campsite and stayed in our tent until it stopped briefly for dinner. The next day was perfectly clear and sunny. We got up early, packed up and headed back down. The hike back was nice and we passed a lot of hikers coming up. We saw some more moose. It was fun to be out on an adventure together again. I think we overcame some tough challenges and we're looking forward to the next one!
